At Southridge Middle School, a Title I campus with every reason to fall behind, Coaches Wane and Taylor chose to lead ahead.
In a world where physical education is often reduced to running laps and keeping kids busy, they reimagined it as a platform for empowerment, leadership, and legacy.
Their approach goes far beyond teaching sports—it teaches students to manage themselves. From morning basketball sessions run by students, to giving kids real roles in sports operations and team logistics, Wane and Taylor instilled accountability, discipline, and purpose.
This wasn't just PE. It was experiential leadership training disguised as sport.
The results?
🏐 A boys' volleyball team that went from obscurity to success.🏀 Morning basketball culture that built character and community.🧠 Students taking ownership—not just in games, but in life.
Even when faced with obstacles—like a disengaged colleague—they stayed focused on the bigger picture: creating a system that lives beyond them.
Their “Program Beyond Sports” is more than a slogan. It’s a replicable model for holistic education, especially in underserved schools where opportunity is often limited but potential is limitless.
Wane and Taylor's vision is simple but profound: Let kids lead, and they will rise. And that’s how education, sport, and leadership truly unite.
